Vermont Civil War Hemlocks
Help Save Gun #229!

Photos of #229 by Hemlock member Scott Cahoon.
The
Hemlocks are very pleased to announce that we have retired the debt for
the purchase of 229 and it's limber. We were able to do this only
because of the generosity of our friends. Thank you one and
all! We hope to see every one of you at one of events this year!
The Vermont Civil War Hemlocks have a unique
opportunity and WE NEED YOUR HELP!
For a
limited period of time, we have the use of and the opportunity to
purchase Phoenix Iron Works 3 inch wrought iron gun #229. Though
we do not have
the history of this Federal gun, it is very probable that this
formidable tube saw extensive service during the Civil War. The
gun was built by Phoenix in 1862. Did it serve throughout the War
in a Federal battery? Was it captured by the Confederates and
used against the Federals? One thing is for sure. It is an
impressive piece and deserves to be seen and touched by lovers of Civil
War history and the public alike.
We need to raise sufficient funds to purchase this gun and thus give it
a permanent home where it will thrill thousands of people for years to
come. We have already seen fire in the eyes of those that touch
it and just imagine it's history. We need to raise $50,000
dollars and we are running out of time. We are not professional
fund
raisers. We hired a grant writer and essentially wasted a year
waiting for him to promote our cause. He didn't. We are now
soliciting for funds, searching for grants, selling tee shirts,
conducting raffles and a number of other activities aimed at saving Gun
#229. Times are tough. Most folks don't have a lot of extra
money floating around. We would very much appreciate your
help! Every dollar counts. If you could part with
just a few green backs, it would help our cause immensely and we would
very much appreciate it!
UPDATE:
Through loans to the Hemlocks, we have now purchased Gun #229. We
have loan payments and a large debt we must retire. Everything
helps!!
